Medicare Part A: What Does It Cover and What Does It Cost?

Medicare Part A, which is part of Original Medicare, covers very specific health care services.

What does Medicare Part A cover?

Medicare Part A Coverage includes only these 5 services:

  • Inpatient hospital care

  • Inpatient mental health care

  • Skilled nursing services

  • Hospice care

  • Some blood transfusion

What is the cost of Medicare Part A coverage?

If you or your spouse worked forty quarter hours, you will not have a Part A premium.

However, Part A has a $1,408 deductible (2020) per benefit period and 20% co-insurance. These additional costs can be significant. We recommend you obtain additional coverage in the form of a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage Plan to avoid the potential risk of these coverage gaps.
